Mouths and Rabbits - أفواه وأرانب

$495.00

Prolific filmmaker Henry Barakat directed this poignant film about a young woman named Neamat (played by Faten Hamama), who is unmarried and lives humbly with her sister, brother-in-law and their nine children. She escapes an arranged marriage to a nearby town and a new life, where she falls in love with a wealthy landowner (played by Mahmoud Yassin) who respects her despite her modest upbringing.

This poster is a rarity: it's an alternative edition designed by Syrian fine artist Najdat Kalaaji, who was prolific in Syria but rarely ventured into works from other countries. The artist captures the spirit of the film much more capably than the original poster, focusing on Hamama and Yassin in a romantic moment. The image of the family with its nine children is drawn from the film and summarizes the struggle to feed everyone. The film is itself unique for audaciously addressing many contemporaneous social issues, including poverty, birth control, class reconciliation, and rural-to-urban migration. This poster documents a momentous time in Egypt's social history.
