A Story From Our Village - حكاية من بلدنا

$350.00 $465.00

In this film from the period of Egyptian cinema's transition to a more publicly funded model, director Helmy Halim tells the story of a village held hostage by its corrupt mayor, who monopolizes the local crop and sells food to the villagers at exorbitant prices. When one man demonstrates the courage to stand up to the mayor, the other villagers join him in taking action.

Shukry Sarhan dominates from the center, in his traditional garb and clutching a plow. Nahed Gabr appears happy and radiant above, however two others of the farmers appear exhausted from their struggle. The vivid green background hints at the pastoral setting and the freestyle title handwriting represents simplicity and spontaneity. This is a fine example of a poster from a transformative era in Egyptian filmmaking.
